It wasn’t that long ago when we relied on the heavy brick of a book, we called a telephone directory to list our business details so that our customers could find us. However, times have changed dramatically, as Google has transformed how people seek businesses. One effective tool for enhancing your online visibility is the Google Business Profile.
What is a Google Business Profile and Why Do I Need It?
The Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is a free tool that lets you manage how your business appears on Google Maps and Search.
If you think you don’t need to worry about Google Business Profile because you’ve got all your info on your website, think again. Many people will search your business without visiting your site. They’re often looking for quick info, like your phone number or address.
Proactively managing your Google Business Profile lets you control what these searchers see. Here are the things you can do with a Google Business Profile:
- Provide your potential customers with all the information they need, like business hours, phone number, location, and directions.
- Post photos and videos about your business and the products or services you offer.
- Add posts to your profile to promote events, special offers, or announcements.
- Direct customers to your website and social media profiles.
- Set up bookings/reservations/appointments or online ordering for your business.
- Manage reviews from customers.
The primary reason for maintaining a Google Business Profile is to ensure your information is readily available for potential customers, curated and updated by you, accurately reflecting how you want to represent your business.
Setting Up Your Google Business Profile
Check for an Existing Profile
Many businesses that have been operating for a while may already have a Google Business Profile even if they did not create it.
Google gathers information from a variety of sources like publicly available information, user contribution, and third-party data to create profiles for existing businesses.
To check if your business already has a profile, search for your business name and city on Google Search or Maps. If a profile appears, claim and verify it. If not, add a new listing
Adding a New Business Profile
If your business doesn’t have an existing profile yet, you can create a one on the Google Business Profile website by signing in with your Google account associated with your business and clicking Manage Now.
Fill out the required information about your business, including its name, type, category, contact information, website, etc.
Alternatively, open the Google Maps app on your phone, tap Contribute at the bottom, then Add place> Is this your business? This will direct you to the Google Business Profile page to fill out your business information.
Claiming a Business Profile
To claim an existing profile, click Claim this business on Google Maps or Own this business?
on Google Search. You’ll be directed to business.google.com (log in if needed) and then click Manage Now.
Verifying your Business Profile
After adding or claiming your listing, enter your mailing address and click Next to proceed to verification.
Select a verification option on the next page. Available methods may include video recording, phone call, text message, email, or live video call.
Please note that not all verification options may be available to you. Google’s system will automatically determine which methods you can use based on factors such as your business category, public information, region, and business hours.
Follow the on-screen instructions for the selected method. Here’s an overview of each method.
Video Recording
Make sure to plan ahead before recording your video. It should be at least 30 seconds long and recorded as one continuous shot without any breaks.
You must record and upload the video directly from a mobile device using your Business Profile; pre-recorded videos cannot be uploaded.
If you began the verification process on a computer, you can continue it on your mobile device by scanning a QR code. Ensure the video meets all the specified requirements outlined here.
Phone or Text
Make sure you can answer your business phone number or receive texts. Interactive Voice Response (IVR) systems will not get the code. Answer the call or open the text with the code, and then enter it in your profile.
Enter the email address associated with your business. You should receive an email from Google. Follow the instructions in the email to verify your account.
Live Video Call
Before beginning the verification process, ensure that you have a mobile device capable of joining a live call.
You should also be at your business location and prepared to demonstrate proof of ownership and location. This could include showing exterior signs, business equipment, access to employee-only areas, or non-sensitive business documents.
After selecting the Live Video Call option, tap Next, select a language, and tap Start a call. A representative will help join your call if available. Use the camera device to show your business location and ownership.
Checking your Verification Status
The verification process can take up to five business days. Once verified, you will receive an email confirmation. To check the verification status of your business listing, go to Check your verification status – Google Business Profile Help and follow the instructions.
