We were honoured to bring the iconic Jacaranda Atlas into the digital age with a fully interactive application, and we were thrilled by its rapturous reception.
Let’s digitise an Aussie icon
Jacaranda World Atlas has been a fixture of Australian geography education for over 40 years, but books are so last century, right? So we worked with the Jacaranda team to bring this Aussie icon to 21st century children in a beautiful new interactive application.
A whole new world
We spent a lot of time strategising how to create a product that would be beautiful to look at. We also created the rotating globe in a way that is easy to navigate, and engaging and fun to play with for the student – so learning becomes like a game.
Students who use myWorld Atlas are instantly engaged with a 3D globe that becomes their personalised world. GIS capability and video from National Geographic and ABC provide an online environment to explore, test geography skills, gain instant feedback and create case studies, with a bank of interactive video questions.
The bottom line
Over 1000 questions link to a progress tracker, identifying strengths and areas that require further study. Users can add notes, videos and images and publish their case studies on the parent myWorld Atlas website or social network sites.
myWorld Atlas quickly became the highest selling digital product of Jacaranda’s parent company Wiley, selling a whopping seven times the original target.
That’s what she said
Mettro are really good at partnering. Rather than seeing themselves as just a supplier that took the brief and ticked the boxes, they took the project on as their own baby. This project was technically very complicated – there were a lot of problems to solve. Mettro worked with our technical teams every step of the way and made sure the application was a success. Integration work is where a lot of these projects fall over.

This resource pushes publishing into a whole different league. The user interface is intuitive and easy to use, as well as being fun, and the design and programming are great. There is an amazing depth of information and this resource is relevant for students throughout their secondary education.
